'American Idol' Recap 'Top Seven and Idol Gives Back'

The special episode of 'American Idol' featured numerous social causes.

Wednesday night's American Idol show was a mixture of the results show and Idol Gives Back.

Ryan Seacrest opened the show with video footage of President Obama and the First Lady. The pair praised Idol Gives Back and encouraged viewers to donate money to the causes.

Queen Latifah was the host of Idol Gives Back at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium where there was a screaming crowd.

The top 12 were reunited for another group performance. The messages then began with Jennifer Garner visiting an area deep in the Appalachian Mountains where there is extreme poverty.

Victoria Beckham appeared on the Idol stage along with two children to talk about poverty in eastern Kentucky. Idol Gives Back donated books, food, and other essentials.

Comedians Jonah Hill and Russell Brand brought some needed light-heartedness to the night. They jokingly organized a celebrity phone bank for the event. George Lopez provided some more comic relief when he judged the judges rather than the American Idol contestants. Wanda Sykes also joked around with the judges.

Footage of Seacrest's trip to Africa was shown in which he discussed malaria, a highly preventable disease. Merely having mosquito nets can prevent the many deaths this illness causes.

Kara DioGuardi's charity clip featured her visit to Africa and brought to light their much-needed medical care, while Morgan Freeman spoke about Mississippi’s poor educational situation. He and Randy Jackson went to Mississippi and worked with Save the Children, which provides books, food, and other necessities to needy families.

Celebrity performances included Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood. An all-star group consisting of Mary J. Blige, Orianthi, Travis Barker, Steve Vai, and Randy Jackson came together to perform "Stairway to Heaven." They received a standing ovation from the judges.

Ellen DeGeneres travelled with David Arquette to an area of California where people are struggling to make ends meet. Seacrest also interviewed Bill and Melinda Gates. Bill spoke about global health care.

David Cook brought awareness about domestic slavery and sex trade in Ethiopia, while Annie Lenox and Sir Elton John both addressed the AIDS issue.

Simon Cowell's trip to Douglas Arizona featured Dr. John who is personally helping the town by riding around a bus to treat children. According to Simon's live update, more than $15 million was raised, thanks to Idol Gives Back and Save the Children.

In the end, attention was finally turned toward the bottom three: Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly, and Casey James. Aaron Kelly and Casey James were declared safe, while Tim Urban received the lowest number of votes.

Pacquiao’s Hawaii concert canceled

Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao’s scheduled concert at Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 21 has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

According to a report published by the Honolulu Advertiser on March 17, Ryan Chang of Island Fire Productions claimed that only 603 out of the 8,500 seats of the venue for the “Manny Pacquiao Live in Hawaii Concert Celebration” have been sold so far.

The ticket prices range from $25 to $150. Pacquiao would have earned $100,000 from the hour-long concert.

"I don't know what to say about what happened. We thought Hawaii would appreciate bringing him in and 25 bucks is pretty cheap and reasonable,” Chang told the paper.

The concert producer added that they had hoped to sell at least 2,500 tickets to break even. However, based on the low ticket sales vis-a-vis the approaching date of the concert, Island Fire Productions has decided to cancel the show.

“We needed to either pull out now or make about $175,000 to break even. I couldn't risk dropping that much for my investors,” Chang said.

The Honolulu Advertiser report said that Pacquiao “was going to sing for an hour with his MP Band and he was going to give away an autographed replica of the IBO light welterweight championship belt he earned with his win over Ricky Hatton last May. More than 20 other musicians, deejays, jugglers, dancers and magicians were also scheduled to take part in the concert.”

A meet-and-greet session with Pacquiao and select ticket holders was also planned.

Thirty-five years after ‘Network’ and ‘All the President’s Men’, in which journalists told uncomfortable truths and defended democracy, ‘Green Zone’ makes military personnel do the noble work which craven reporters shirk. The only consolation is that the movie is inspired by a work of journalism, Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s ‘Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone’.

Set in Iraq in the months following the 2003 invasion, the film reunites the director and star of ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’, Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon; this time, however, we already know the details of the underhanded government action our hero confronts. Damon plays an army warrant officer whose WMD sorties keep coming up empty; unwilling to roll over, he’s soon embroiled in a turf war between the CIA and the Pentagon (personified by conscientious Brendan Gleeson and oleaginous Greg Kinnear) while attempting to wrangle a Ba’athist general (Igal Naor), a useful veteran (Said Faraj) and a useless embedded reporter (Amy Ryan) against a backdrop of more-or-less real events.

Greengrass’s approach to real-life disaster is far more simplified and pumped up here than it was in ‘United 93’ or ‘Bloody Sunday’, but there’s much to be said for his ‘Bourne in Baghdad’ approach. The action is robust, the politics simplified but strident, insisting that a wilfully under-prepped war worked against both US and Iraqi interests. By shifting focus from the naively doctrinaire civilians of Chandrasekaran’s book to street-level soldiers questioning authority, Greengrass concocts a formula with a fighting chance of dispelling the Curse of the Hollywood Iraq Movie. If a picture as conventionally accessible as ‘Green Zone’ tanks, that campaign is surely lost.

Leno continues high ratings streak

The results have just come in from Nielsen Media Research's fast nationals (preliminary ratings), and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is yet again No. 1 in its time slot.

Leno's total viewers were just slightly lower than the 5.8 million who watched Tuesday night; he had with 5.4 million viewers overall for Wednesday night's show. David Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS had 3.7 million and ABC's "Nightline" had a midweek slump with 3.4 million, down from the 4.1 million who watched on Monday.

Jimmy Fallon isn't doing bad either. He's holding his own as No. 1 in his time slot at 12:35 a.m, and had 2 million viewers in comparison to the 1.7 million who watched Craig Ferguson on "The Late, Late Show."

Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, will return to her broadcast roots and take her conservative message to Fox News as a regular commentator, the cable channel announced Monday.

"I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News," Palin said in a statement posted on the network's Web site. "It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news."

Fox said that according to the multiyear deal, Palin will offer political commentary and analysis on the cable channel, as well as Fox's Web site, radio network and business cable channel.

She also will host occasional episodes of Fox News' "Real American Stories," a series debuting this year that the network said will feature true inspirational stories about Americans who have overcome adversity.

"Governor Palin has captivated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum and we are excited to add her dynamic voice to the FOX News lineup," Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming, said in a statement.

The network declined to say when Palin will start or how much she is being paid. Also unclear is how the arrangement will work, whether Palin will move to New York or commute from Alaska. Company representatives did not respond to calls seeking comment and Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, did not respond to e-mails seeking comment.

Palin, 45, is hugely popular with conservatives and has more than 1.1 million Facebook followers.

She stepped down as Alaska governor in July, 17 months before the end of her first term in office and less than a year after she vaulted to overnight fame as John McCain's running mate.

The bombshell resignation stunned even supporters and fueled widespread speculation on her next career step — with predictions ranging from seeking the presidency in 2012 to hosting a conservative talk show. She told Barbara Walters in November that a 2012 presidential bid was not on her radar but added she wouldn't rule out playing some kind of role in the next presidential election.

Since resigning, Palin has had colossal success with her best-selling memoir "Going Rogue," released four months after she left office. She finished a nationwide tour in December after hitting some of the political battleground states from the 2008 election and drawing thousands of fans.

If she were to seek the presidency, her new job would provide yet another stage from which to advance her conservative platform. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who sought the presidency in 2008, also hosts a talk show on Fox News and hasn't ruled out another run for president.

Palin majored in journalism with an emphasis on broadcasting at the University of Idaho and worked part-time as a weekend sportscaster in 1988 for KTUU-TV in Anchorage. She wasn't married at the time and used her maiden name Heath. The station's sports director, John Carpenter, said the young broadcaster left after a few months because of the low pay.

Carpenter said he was sorry to see her go. She was a hard worker who enjoyed the entire process, not just being in front of the cameras, he said.

"She knew sports, she could talk sports, she looked OK on TV," Carpenter said. "She had the aptitude, no question."

Palin's upcoming commentary career had her Facebook fans giddy with excitement Monday.

"Tell 'em like it is girl!!!!!!," one person wrote on a post.

"I look forward to seeing you on Fox....but I hope it doesn't prevent you from running in '12!," another wrote.

Various media outlets report that rocker Marilyn Manson has been engaged to his actress girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood. He proposed the Sophie-Anne Leclerq of "True Blood" on Monday, December 21 at his concert in Paris, according to E! News.

Rumor has it, Manson presented Wood with a ring and gave her a rose during the proposal. It is also reported that the singer popped the question while performing on stage and canoodled with her backstage afterward.

In the meantime, representatives for both stars refused to comment on the engagement rumor. Also, date for their impending I do's is yet to be unveiled.

Sly on EXPENDABLES Action

According to a new interview with FHM Magazine, Sylvester Stallone certainly wasn't holding anything back in his next action-adventure The Expendables. The star-director told the latest issue of the men's magazine that it got so intense during one fight sequence with co-star Steve "Stone Cold" Austin, he would up with a hairline neck fracture on set last year during filming.

"Man, it was seven guys, kicking each other's ass, one guy tougher than the next. No joke, our stunt guys were begging for mercy. Actually, my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking."

He added: "I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation after wards. I now have a metal plate in my neck."

With the mixed bag of iconic action stars that Sly put together for this film it would seem natural that they would be enjoying themselves on set, broken necks and all. Next summer's adventure stars Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Charisma Carpenter, Giselle Itie, David Zayas, Amin Joseph and the late Brittany Murphy. Private funeral set for heiress Casey Johnson

Casey Johnson, the 30-year-old Johnson & Johnson heiress who was found dead, will be laid to rest later this week in a private funeral attended by immediate family.

"The Johnson family wishes to thank everyone who has expressed condolences and support during this trying time," said family spokesman Jesse Derris. "Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated.

The socialite's family has arranged for her body to be "flown back east to her final resting place," Derris said. No other details were announced.

"The family asks for a measure of privacy over the next several days as they mourn their loss," Derris said.

Johnson, who made tabloid headlines recently by getting engaged to reality star Tila Tequila, was found dead Monday in her Los Angeles, California, home. Johnson had suffered from diabetes since she was a child and had battled drug problems in the past, though no cause of death has been determined and police found no obvious signs that she had taken illegal drugs.

Her family said people can make donations in her memory to the Casey Johnson Memorial at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. "Casey struggled throughout her life fighting this disease, and she would want to see all of us continue that fight on her behalf," said the family spokesman.

Brittany Murphy Laid To Rest In Los Angeles; Family Asks Fans To Light Candles In Remembrance

Brittany Murphy's friends and family gathered at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills cemetery on Christmas Eve as the actress was laid to rest.

"Today a wife, a daughter, a niece, a cousin, a family member and dear friend to thousands was laid to rest," the family said in a statement released to Access Hollywood following the service. "Brittany was an incredibly loving and passionate person and an artist to her core -- she loved acting, singing, dancing, and performing. There are no words that can truly express the devastation felt by Brittany's husband, mother, and everyone who attended the intimate service."

Both a rabbi and a pastor were present at the co-denominational funeral service, which was attended by 20-25 mourners at Forest Lawn's Church of The Hills, Radar Online reported.

Among those who gathered at the service were Brittany's widower, Simon Monjack, and actor and a former bandmate of Brittany's - Eric Balfour. Eric's brother Simon also served as a pallbearer, the Web site reported.

According to the family's statement to Access, a passage from one of Brittany's favorite books was read at the funeral.

"Several of Brittany's closest friends and her cousin also recalled their favorite memories, concluding with an excerpt from 'The Little Prince,' one of her favorite books," the family shared in their statement.

Simon Monjack also spoke at the service.

"At the funeral, Simon described his loving relationship with Brittany and how she was his best friend and soul mate. He went on to say that mystery is the nature of love, and you never know when or where it will strike or how quickly it will be taken from you. He also said that he knows the closeness and beauty of their love will live on forever," the family's statement continued.

The burial service for Brittany, who tragically passed away at the age of 32 after collapsing at her Los Angeles home on Sunday, was held at twilight "with a reading of the Kaddish and the singing of 'Amazing Grace," according to the family's statement.

"A bright light that lit the world is forever dimmed, but will live on in the hearts of those that Brittany touched," the statement read.

According to the family, Christmas was Brittany's favorite holiday. The family has asked that those wishing to honor the late actress "light a candle and remember the beautiful angel that entertained, enlightened, and made the world a better place."

In related news, Dean Cain, Murphy's co-star from "Abandoned," one of the actress' final films, released a statement on her sad passing to Access Hollywood.

"Tragic. She was so talented and so young, and had so much more to offer this world. Heartbreaking. My thoughts are with her loved ones this holiday season," he said in his statement.

Woman knocks down pope at Christmas Eve Mass

A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Christmas Eve Mass, but the 82-year-old pontiff got up unhurt and proceeded as planned with Thursday's service.

Witness video obtained by The Associated Press showed a woman dressed in a red hooded sweat shirt vaulting over the wooden barriers that cordoned off the basilica's main aisle and rushing toward the pope before being swarmed by bodyguards.

The video showed the woman grabbing the pope's vestments as she was taken down by guards, with Benedict then falling on top of her.

The commotion occurred as the pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar and shocked gasps rang out among the thousands who packed the basilica. The procession came to a halt, the music stopped and security rushed to the trouble spot.

A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini said the woman appeared to be mentally unstable and had been taken into custody by Vatican police. He said she also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a checkup.

"During the procession an unstable person jumped a barrier and knocked down the Holy Father," Benedettini told The AP by telephone. "(The pope) quickly got up and continued the procession."

It was the second year in a row that there had been a security breach at the Christmas Eve service and this was the most serious incident involving the public in Benedict's five-year papacy. At the end of last year's Mass, a woman who had jumped the barriers got close to the pope but was quickly blocked on the ground by security.

That woman too wore a red hooded sweat shirt, but Benedettini said it was not immediately known if the same person was behind Thursday's incident.

MaryBeth Burns from Paris, Texas, was about four people away from the woman who jumped the barriers and was filming the pope's procession as the commotion started.

"All of a sudden this person sort of flew over the barricade and the Holy Father went down and all the security people were on top of it, a whole pile there, getting her off and him back up," said Burns, who was visiting Italy with her family on a religious pilgrimage for Christmas.

"I'm really mad because I had a perfect shot lined up," she added. "I'm still shaking."

Benedict lost his miter and his staff in the fall. He remained on the ground for a few seconds before being helped back up by attendants. At that point, a few shouts of "viva il papa!" (long live the pope!) rang out, followed by cheers from the faithful, witnesses said.

After getting up, Benedict, flanked by tense bodyguards, resumed his walk to the basilica's main altar to start the Mass. The pope, who broke his right wrist in a fall this summer, appeared unharmed but somewhat shaken and leaned heavily on aides and an armrest as he sat down in his chair.

Few people who were watching the Mass on giant screens set up in a rain-soaked St. Peter's Square even knew that the pope had fallen, with many saying that either they weren't looking or had arrived too late.

Benedict made no reference to the disturbance after the service started. As a choir sang, he sprinkled incense on the altar before opening the Mass with the traditional wish for peace in Latin.

The incident was the first time a potential attacker came into direct contact with Benedict, and underscored concerns by security analysts who have frequently warned the pope is too exposed in his public appearances.

There have been other security breaches at the Vatican.

In 2007, during an open-air audience in St. Peter's Square, a mentally unstable German man jumped a security barrier and grabbed the back of the pope's open car before being swarmed by security guards.

Then there was the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II by Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca in 1981. John Paul suffered a severe abdominal wound as he rode in an open jeep at the start of his weekly audience in the Vatican piazza.

The pope is protected by a combination of Swiss Guards, Vatican police and Italian police.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., the Vatican has tightened security at events where the pope is present. All visitors must pass by police to get into the square, with those entering the basilica going through metal detectors or being scanned by metal-detecting wands.

However, Sister Samira, an Indian aide to Vatican officials who attended the service and saw the incident, said she is never searched by security when she attends papal Masses, and said the same holds true for other people in religious garb.

Burns, the U.S. pilgrim, said security had been tight, and that it seemed there was no way to have prevented the woman from getting to the pope other than keeping the public out altogether.

"This is Midnight Mass in the heart of our church," she said. "I guess the Holy Father puts himself at risk every time he's around anybody, any crowds really."

In a similar incident, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi was attacked as he was greeting the crowd at a political rally earlier this month. A man with a history of psychological problems hurled a souvenir statuette at the politician, fracturing his nose and breaking two of his teeth.

Benedict celebrated this year's Christmas Eve Mass two hours earlier than the usual midnight starting time in a move by the Vatican to ease the pontiff's busy holiday schedule.

Benedict has been remarkably healthy during his pontificate, keeping to a busy schedule and traveling around the world.

But in July, he broke his wrist during a late-night fall while vacationing in an Alpine chalet and had to have minor surgery and wear a cast for a month — an episode that highlights the risk he ran in Thursday's tumble.

In his homily, delivered unflappably after the incident, the pope urged the world to "wake up" from selfishness and petty affairs, and find time for God and spiritual matters.

"To wake up means to leave that private world of one's own and to enter the common reality," Benedict said in Italian. "Conflict and lack of reconciliation in the world stem from the fact that we are locked into our own interests and opinions, into our own little private world."

Benedict's next scheduled appearance is at noon on Christmas Day, when he is to deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech (Latin for "To the city and the world") from the basilica's balcony.

Now that "Avatar" star Sam Worthington has returned from the distant star system in which the planet Pandora resides, bringing back with him a $77 million opening weekend for the sci-fi action flick, where will the Australian actor go from here? What will 2010 and beyond look like for one of the year's breakout stars?

"Clash of the Titans"After the holidays, Worthington will head back to Britain for reshoots on this remake of the low-tech 1981 flick based on the Greek legend of Perseus. MTV News got a first look at the production when we visited the set this past summer. There, the actor promised us the film would take the original's action sequences and "raise the Richter scale to 11." Early trailers, teeming with sword battles, explosions and a giant scorpion, seem to confirm that promise. The film is set for release in March of next year.

"The Tourist" After sharing the screen with Zoe Saldana in "Avatar," Worthington will step in front of the camera with Angelina Jolie. His role was originally slated to go to Tom Cruise, while Jolie's part was to be occupied by Charlize Theron. A remake of a 2005 French thriller, "Tourist" will see Jolie play an Interpol agent who pulls an innocent American tourist played by Worthington into a plot to nab a criminal. Production has been tentatively set to ramp up in early 2010.

"Last Days of American Crime"In November, Worthington signed on to produce and star in this adaptation of a comic book miniseries. The actor will play Kevin Cash, a dodgy lunatic roped into some wild criminal activity. The project is still in its infancy, but "American Crime" creator Rick Remender knows Worthington is the right man for the job. "He's a scene-stealer, made up in equal parts charm and intelligence," Remender said. "Seeing him play violent sociopath safecracker Kevin Cash will be a treat all the world will enjoy."

The "Avatar" sequel At some point down the road, Worthington will return to Pandora. Director James Cameron insists he'll direct another film before swinging back around to "Avatar" territory. No script has been written, but Worthington has some pretty funny ideas about how to pick up the love story between his character Jake and his alien love interest Neytiri (Saldana).

"I've said to Jim, 'I want Jake to be fat and up in the new home tree, kicking it back, couple of kids coming around — typical family — telling Neytiri to go get me a beer,' " he laughed during a recent interview. "Neytiri then shoots me with an arrow!"

And can they really explain Brittany Murphy's death from cardiac arrest at the age of 32?

Actress Brittany Murphy, famous for her roles in Clueless and 8 Mile, died Sunday of sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 32. The L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner has stated that the death "appears to be natural." What does it mean to die of natural causes?

For a coroner, any death caused by disease or old age is natural. When someone dies a violent or suspicious death, medical examiners try to determine both a "cause" and a "manner." The cause refers to the biological condition that killed the victim—in Murphy's case, sudden cardiac arrest. The manner describes all the other circumstances that led up to that particular cause. Most states recognize five different manners: homicide, suicide, accident, natural, and undetermined. If a manner of death is deemed to be "natural," then the victim is thought to have died of an internal disease process or normal deterioration of the body. Outside forces, like chemicals or human intervention, had only a minimal influence. (There are some gray areas: Death by infectious disease is typically categorized as being natural, even though the killer microbes come from outside the body.)

In general, it's much easier to determine the cause of death than the manner. To say that Murphy died of sudden cardiac arrest means only that her heart stopped beating unexpectedly, a fact that might be explained by any of the five manner classifications. Her death might have resulted from "natural" conditions like an enlarged heart, thickened ventrical walls, disruptions in the heart's electrical signals, or clogged arteries—not unknown among 32-year-olds, especially if they have diabetes. Or it might have followed from the ingestion of drugs (like cocaine) or poisons—making it a homicide, a suicide, or an accident. (A massive blow to the chest can stop the heart, too, but that would have left obvious signs.) Drug deaths can be tough to categorize, because circumstantial evidence is required to separate accidental overdoses from suicides.

When all the tests are back from the lab, the medical examiner or the coroner—typically an elected official without medical training who consults the medical examiner—prepares the death certificate with the cause, manner, and a brief description. There is some variation in the forms. John Lennon's death certificate, for example, contains a series of causes to indicate the cascading physical effects of his gunshot wound.

Even when the facts are clear, medical examiners sometimes disagree on the manner. If a patient is killed by a clot that breaks off during a procedure to clear up his clogged arteries, medical examiners can call it an accident (the medical error) or natural (the underlying disease). A man who has a heart attack while shoveling snow dies a natural death, but if the heart attack happens during a fistfight, his death is usually a homicide. Death from an allergic reaction to a bee sting can be called natural or accidental. While acute alcohol intoxication from a night of binge drinking is always classified as an accident or suicide, the death of a lifelong alcoholic from cirrhosis of the liver is usually classified as natural. (If Murphy's heart was weakened as a result of an eating disorder, as has been rumored, the medical examiner may analogize this to an alcoholic's impaired liver.)

These classifications are medical, and they sometimes diverge from legal usage. For example, if a victim were killed by a drunk driver, the medical examiner would typically classify the death as an accident, but prosecutors may consider it a homicide. The opposite result is also possible. In cases such as a killing in self-defense, the medical examiner might deem a death a homicide, but the prosecutor would not file charges.

Get Out: Orionid Meteor Shower Peaks Overnight

The Orionid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show tonight into the predawn hours Wednesday, weather permitting.

This annual meteor shower is created when Earth passes through trails of comet debris left in space long ago by Halley's Comet. The "shooting stars" develop when bits typically no larger than a pea , and mostly sand-grain-sized, vaporize in Earth's upper atmosphere.

"Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.

People in cities and suburbs will see far fewer meteors, because all but the brightest of them will be overpowered by light pollution. The best view will be from rural areas (the moon will not be a factor, so dark skies will make for ideal viewing).

When and how to watch

The best time to watch will be between 1 a.m. and dawn local time Wednesday morning, regardless of your location. That's when the patch of Earth you are standing on is barreling headlong into space on Earth's orbital track, and meteors get scooped up like bugs on a windshield.

Peak activity, when Earth wades into the densest part of the debris, is expected around 6 a.m. ET (3 a.m. PT).

Some meteors could show up late tonight, too. Late-night viewing typically offers fewer meteors, however, because your patch of Earth is positioned akin to the back window of the speeding car.

The Orionids have been strong in recent years.

"Since 2006, the Orionids have been one of the best showers of the year, with counts of 60 or more meteors per hour," Cooke said.

Some of those counts come in flurries, so skywatchers should find a comfortable spot with as wide a view of the sky as possible. Lie back and allow 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, then give the show at least a half hour to play out through spurts and lulls. Meteors could appear anywhere in the sky, though traced back they will appear to emanate from the constellation Orion.

Telescopes and binoculars are of no use, because meteors move too quickly. Extra warm clothing is a must, and a blanket and pillow or lounge chair allows comfortable positioning so you can look up for long stretches.

Reliable event

Predicting meteor showers is tricky because the debris comes from multiple streams.

Each time comet Halley passes around the sun on its elongated orbit – every 76 years – it lays down a fresh track of debris for Earth to plow through in subsequent years. Those tracks spread out and mingle over time, and we pass the tracks each October during our 365-day, nearly circular trek around the sun.

Japanese researchers Mikiya Sato and Jun-ichi Watanabe say activity in recent years is related to debris put in place from 1266 BC to 911 BC, and this could be another good year, according to NASA.

Even if that prediction does not hold, the Orionids will almost surely put on a decent show. Prior to 2006 and going back many years, the Orionids have produced a reliable 15 to 20 meteors per hour at the peak, for skywatchers with dark skies.

As a bonus, this time of year you can expect an additional five to 10 sporadic meteors per hour – those not related to the shower.

Former Playboy model Shauna Sand is trying to block the release of a hardcore sex tape she made but says wasn't supposed to be released. The 38-year-old mother of three admitted to TMZ.com that the video, which was leaked the day after her ex-husband Lorenzo Lamas' E! reality show, "Leave it to Lamas" premiered, does exist. She added that Vivid Entertainment, which acquired the video via a third party, has no right to distribute it and that she would fight the Oct. 19 release of the DVD.

Sand also said that she has "in fact" made "several sex tapes" over the years.
